The Power Play: Why Even Coaches Need Coaches

The image of a lone wolf – a maverick crushing it without needing a helping hand – is tempting, isn’t it? But after 30 years in the corporate trenches, I’ve learned that even the sharpest tools need sharpening. And that’s especially true for us coaches!

It might seem a bit backwards at first. We’re the ones dishing out the advice, right? But think of it like this: even the Springboks have coaches fine-tuning their game. We, too, need an objective eye to help us reach our full potential and, more importantly, to better serve our clients here in South Africa and internationally

Why Coaches Need Coaches: My View

Spotting the Blinders: We all have blind spots – those areas where we think we’re doing great, but are actually missing a trick or two. A coach gives you that outside perspective, a brutally honest (but kind!) assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. It’s like having someone point out that you’ve been driving with the handbrake on!

  • Sharpening the Toolkit: Coaching is a skill, just like any other. It needs constant work. A coach helps you refine your communication – that crucial skill of ubuntu – develop deeper listening skills (really hearing what your clients are saying), and tailor your approach to make the biggest impact, especially considering the unique challenges and opportunities we face in the South African business landscape.
  • Accountability – Keeping You on Track: Even with the best intentions, life gets in the way. A coach provides the structure, helps set realistic goals, and keeps you on track. They’re that ‘oomph’ you need to stay motivated when things get tough.
  • Expanding the Gees: The world of coaching is always changing. A coach introduces you to new methods, new tools, and new ways of thinking – expanding your coaching gees and helping you connect with your clients on a deeper level.
  • Preventing Izikhathazo (Burnout): Coaching can be emotionally draining, let’s be honest. Having your own coach provides a safe space to process those experiences, manage stress, and avoid burnout. It’s like having a ‘chommie’ who really gets it, ensuring you can continue to serve your clients with passion and energy.

Proof in the Pudding:

Look at global leaders like Bill Gates, Eric Schmidt and Oprah Winfrey. They all had coaches. People at the absolute top of their game sought guidance to get where they are.

Investing in Your Power Play:

For us coaches, investing in our own development isn’t a luxury – it’s essential. By embracing the guidance of a mentor, we gain a competitive edge, refine our skills, and ultimately become more effective at empowering others, contributing to the growth and success of businesses right here in South Africa. Let’s ditch the myth of the lone wolf and embrace the power of coaches coaching coaches. Together, we can drive each other towards greater heights of success and make a real difference in the lives of our clients and the South African business community. Are you ready to play?
